AB659-Cancer Prevention Act:

The parents and guardians of pupils admitted or advancing to the sixth grade level are hereby notified that the State of California advises that pupils adhere to current immunization guidelines, as recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians, regarding full human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization before admission or advancement to the eighth grade level of any private or public elementary or secondary school. While HPV vaccination is not required for school, HPV vaccination is routinely recommended at age 11-12 years, and can start as early as 9 years. The vaccine is more effective if given sooner because pre-teens produce more antibodies after HPV vaccination than older teens. Vaccinating at a younger age can also protect kids before they are exposed to the virus. HPV vaccination can prevent over 90 percent of cancers caused by HPV. HPV vaccines are very safe, and scientific research shows that the benefits of HPV vaccination far outweigh the potential risks.

Screen Time Before Bed
Screen time before bed may delay sleep onset. Greater time spent watching TV, using the computer or playing video games before bedtime was associated with a later sleep onset among children and teens, New Zealand researchers found. A difference in screen sedentary time of just 13 minutes between the late sleep onset group and the early sleep group adds up to almost an hour of sleep during the school week, according to the study in the journal Pediatrics. HealthDay News 

Monica Sidher, RN, MSN

Monica joined the LASD Health Services team in May 2012. Her nursing experience includes inpatient pediatric surgery and neuroscience as well as LVN teaching. Her passion has always been to work with children and families in a public health setting, which is what brought her to our district. In December 2016 she completed her school nurse credential and Master's degree in Nursing at Sacramento State University. Monica enjoys travelling, working out, reading, and spending time with her husband and two children.

Mary Fitzgerald, RN, MSN

Mary joined the LASD Health Services team in the fall of 2019. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Master's degree as a School Health Nurse Practitioner and FNP from the University of San Diego. Mary enjoys running, travel, and art.

District LVNs

Goretti Furtado

Goretti joined the LASD Health Services team in October 2019 and has 7 years of experience as an LVN, working with children and in pediatrics day care. Recently, she worked with San Jose Unified School District as an LVN. She grew up in Santa Cruz county and now resides in Santa Clara county. Most often, she enjoys camping, playing "pirates and dinosaurs" in the back yard with her children and making fun memories with her family.

Julie Pampeyan

Julie began working as a contracted nurse for LASD in 2013. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from San Jose State University. She worked for 10 years as a trauma, cardiac, and neuro intensive care nurse, then worked in the gastrointestinal clinic for 2 years at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. From 2013 through June 2022, Julie has been a contract nurse with LASD and joined the LVN team in August 2022. She loves increasing her skills and taking care of school aged children. Julie has a husband, daughter, and son and enjoys camping, walking her two dogs, and scrapbooking.

Eliza Lee

Eliza is grateful to continue her journey by joining the LASD Health Services team. Prior to becoming an LVN in March 2021, she was a certified nursing assistant at a nursing facility. She has had the opportunity to work as an LVN with students from multiple school districts through a medical staffing agency. On her free time, Eliza enjoys watching reruns of The Office, visiting theme parks (especially Disneyland), and spending time with her family and senior pups. 

Viviana Lopez

Viviana joined the LASD Health Services team in the 2022-2023 school year. She was born in Los Angeles and raised in Riverside, CA. She enjoys the outdoors, walking her dog, exploring new cities with friends and best of all spending time with family. Viviana's mother was a caregiver for special needs children, so she has always been fascinated in helping and teaching children. After graduating high school, Viviana became a caregiver for special needs children and young adults. She has been a nurse for about 5 years and has worked for 3 different school districts. After entering the school setting, she has enjoyed being a nurse so much more! Her ultimate goal for LASD is to give students the best level of care
