Volunteer In LASD
Los Altos School District is fortunate to have an exceptionally engaged parent and community volunteers. Their contributions enrich the student experience in countless ways, from supporting classrooms and libraries to assisting with field trips, school events, and other educational activities. We are deeply grateful for the time, energy, and expertise our volunteers bring to our schools.
LASD currently has screening requirements for certain volunteer roles, including Living Classroom volunteers, Art Docents, and overnight field trip chaperones. Beginning with the 2026–27 school year, the district will expand its Volunteer Authorization Process to include all school volunteers. This updated process builds on our existing practices and aligns with California Education Codes 35021 and 49406, Senate Bill 848, as well as Board Policy 1240, which authorize school districts to screen and approve volunteers who work with students.
Volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the volunteer authorization process. Our goal is to make volunteering both safe and accessible. We deeply value the partnership of our families and community members and appreciate your willingness to complete these requirements so you can continue supporting students and schools.
Visitors vs. Volunteers
Not everyone who comes onto a school campus is considered a volunteer. Individuals attending student performances, classroom celebrations, PTA events, parent-teacher conferences, or conducting business in the school office are considered visitors and are not required to complete the Volunteer Authorization Process. Visitors must check in at the school office and wear a visitor badge while on campus, and they are not left alone with students.
Individuals who provide services or support to students or school programs as volunteers are subject to varying levels of screening depending on the nature of their activities. Please review the volunteer types and associated forms below to determine which requirements apply to your role. Volunteer requirements increase based on the level of responsibility and student interaction associated with each role. Each level builds upon the requirements of the previous level to ensure the safety and well-being of our students.

-
Level One Volunteers work under the direct supervision of a Los Altos School District staff member at all times and are never left alone with students. They provide support to teachers, staff, or students in roles such as classroom helpers, fieldtrip chaperones, lunchtime volunteers, library assistants, or office volunteers.
Level One Volunteer Requirements
To be approved as a Level One Volunteer, individuals must:
-
Complete the Level One Volunteer Authorization Form.
-
Complete a California Tuberculosis (TB) Risk Assessment, administered and signed by an authorized health care provider.
-
If no TB risk factors are identified, submit the completed and signed TB Risk Assessment form to LASD.
-
If TB risk factors are identified, the volunteer must complete the recommended TB testing and provide documentation of a negative TB test result before being cleared to volunteer.
-
Once these requirements have been completed and approved, the individual will be authorized to serve as a Level One Volunteer.

Level Two Volunteers support students, teachers, and school programs in roles that may involve working with students outside the direct supervision of a Los Altos School District staff member. Examples include tutors, mentors, Living Classroom volunteers, Art Docents, lunch club leaders (such as Chess Club or Lego Club), and chaperones for overnight field trips, including programs such as Pigeon Point or Yosemite.
Level Two Volunteer Requirements
To be approved as a Level Two Volunteer, individuals must:
-
Complete the Level Two Volunteer Authorization Form.
-
Complete a California Tuberculosis (TB) Risk Assessment, administered and signed by an authorized health care provider.
-
If no TB risk factors are identified, submit the completed and signed TB Risk Assessment form to LASD.
-
If TB risk factors are identified, complete the recommended TB testing and provide documentation of a negative TB test result before being cleared to volunteer.
-
-
Complete Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fingerprinting through the district's Live Scan process and receive clearance before volunteering.
-
Complete the Keenan Mandated Reporter online training.
Once all requirements have been completed and approved, the individual will be authorized to serve as a Level Two Volunteer.
PLEASE NOTE:
All Level Two and Three Volunteers are required to be fingerprinted and cleared by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI in order to be cleared by LASD. Once a volunteer has been fingerprinted via LiveScan for LASD, they will not need to be fingerprinted again in future school years. LiveScan results and information are specific to an organization. LASD does not have access to fingerprinting results completed through other organizations. Therefore, all volunteers will need to complete Live Scan fingerprinting for LASD in order to be cleared to volunteer in LASD even if they have been fingerprinted previously for other organizations.
When submitting for Live Scan fingerprints, be aware that LASD Human Resources has full visibility to any history of arrest for a felony or misdemeanor regardless of conviction outcome. If a volunteer has ever been arrested, they may be called by Human Resources to provide additional information. Sometimes this could delay or prevent a volunteer’s clearance.
Individuals needing to be fingerprinted during the current school year should first complete the Volunteer Application and TB requirement. Following completion of the application, volunteers will receive follow-up instructions, including the LiveScan registration form.
