No-Cost Meals for All Students
California has become the first state to pass universal free school meals program for all public school students. Free lunch will be offered at all schools. Free breakfast will be offered at participating school sites. All meals will comply with federal nutrition regulations.
Offer versus Serve (OVS) is a provision in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) that allows students to decline some of the food offered. The goals of OVS are to reduce food waste in the school meals program while permitting students to decline foods they do not intend to eat. For more information about OVS, visit USDA Food and Nutrition Services.
