More Ways to Learn and Grow

In the Los Altos School District, we believe a well-rounded education includes opportunities for students to explore, create, collaborate, move, and grow in many ways. These experiences support academic achievement while also nurturing curiosity, creativity, physical wellness, social-emotional development, and civic responsibility. Together, these programs enrich the student experience and contribute to the development of learners as full people.

Computer Science
Students explore the world of computer science through age-appropriate lessons in coding, problem-solving, and digital citizenship. These experiences help students develop logical reasoning, creativity, and a strong foundation for the digital world.

Music
Beginning in 4th grade, students have access to music education that includes performance, listening, and music theory. These experiences build discipline, creativity, and collaboration, while also enhancing cognitive skills that support other areas of learning.

Physical Education
PE develops students’ physical literacy, motor skills, fitness, and teamwork. Through structured movement and games, students build confidence, learn to cooperate with others, and understand the importance of lifelong health and wellness.

Art Docents
The Art Docents program brings high-quality visual arts instruction into classrooms through parent and community volunteers. Students engage with artistic techniques, famous works of art, and hands-on creative projects that foster self-expression and visual literacy.

Living Classroom
Students engage in hands-on environmental science and gardening lessons. These lessons bring science and sustainability to life while developing students' sense of stewardship and wonder about the natural world.

Library
School libraries are vibrant hubs of literacy and learning. Students develop research skills, explore new genres, and engage in read-alouds and book talks that build a love of reading and support academic growth.

Junior High Electives
Our junior high students have access to a broad range of elective courses including visual and performing arts, STEM, leadership, and more. These electives allow students to pursue their interests and develop new passions.

Expanded Learning Opportunities Program
ELO-P provides additional enrichment and academic support beyond the traditional school day for students who qualify. This includes STEM, art, movement, and other creative experiences that reinforce school-day learning while nurturing student interests.

Health
Health instruction supports student well-being and decision-making by providing age-appropriate lessons on nutrition, safety, personal development, and mental and emotional health. These lessons help students build knowledge and skills for healthy living.
