Art Docents Program Update

For 55 years, the Art Docents Program’s mission has been to spark an early awareness of art in children through both appreciation and participation. Last year was its strongest yet. Docents taught 740 lessons across 54 offerings in TK–6th grade, and every teacher in the district ordered lessons (a 98% order rate). Two new second-grade lessons, Printing Landscapes and Wire Trees, connected art to science and math. The district-wide art showcase drew 176 student artists.

This year, the program is growing. With 80 returning docents and 16 new trainees, it offers 58 unique lessons for the district's 109 elementary classrooms, up to 804 lessons in all. New this year:

  • New lessons: Hands-on "Playing with Line" and "Playing with Color" stations for TK, a silk screen printing lesson for 4th grade, and three lessons moved up to kindergarten (Birds of Color, Line Bots, Pattern Portraits). Kindergarten now has its full eight lessons.
  • A new scheduling app: Teachers can browse lessons and book them in real time.
  • A continuing education grant: Docents can apply to attend an art seminar, workshop, or class, then share what they learn with the whole group.

This year's theme, You Are All Artists, is about helping students see that their creations matter. As the docents reminded the Board, art isn't about getting the right answer. It's about curiosity, exploration, and making something your own.

Save the date: The District Art Showcase is Wednesday, November 18, 5:00–7:00 p.m. at Covington. Come celebrate our young artists.

Measure N and Measure EE Update

San Antonio Campus: Demolition Is Underway
Work on the 11.65-acre site is on schedule and on budget. Crews are recycling concrete and asphalt on site, and the new campus will be all-electric with no gas service. Underground utility work is underway now, and building pads and foundations should begin by the end of the year. Steel is expected to start going up around January 15. Crews have added dust control and stormwater protection as they prepare for winter. The beeping you may hear is a required CalOSHA safety alert on heavy equipment and is a normal part of construction.

Planning Is Underway at Six Projects
Six projects are now in active planning. The two middle school conversions (Egan and Blach) and the modernizations at Santa Rita, Oak, and Almond have all held architect kickoff meetings. Architects are assessing building systems and reviewing drawings. They are expected to submit plans to the Division of the State Architect by next summer.

Quick Start Projects: Visible Improvements Sooner
Design and state review take time, so the District is exploring smaller "quick start" projects that don't require state approval. They would let families see their bond dollars at work at school sites as early as summer 2027. Ideas include:
  • Repairing and re-striping parking lots and play areas
  • Fresh exterior paint for our schools
  • New landscaping and welcoming seating areas
  • Consistent, updated school signage

Staff will bring a list of potential projects with budgets back to the Board in November.

Revised 2026-27 Board Meeting Calendar

The Board of Trustees has approved a change to the 2026-27 meeting calendar. The regular October meeting will now take place on Monday, October 26, 2026, instead of October 19. The move avoids a conflict with the Santa Clara County Teacher of the Year Celebration, which is also on October 19. LASD will be celebrating last year’s teacher of the year, Candice Marquis.

Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. at the District Office, 201 Covington Road, Los Altos. The full revised calendar is available on the District website: https://www.lasdschools.org/274295_2
