All of our schools serve students with severe food allergies. Below, please find information about the steps Los Altos School District takes to minimize the risk of a severe allergic reaction.

Classroom Accommodations

Accommodations may vary for each student, but those listed below are common:

  • Classroom hand-washing after meals

  • Ensuring the allergen is not involved in classroom activities including art and science projects and classroom parties involving food

  • Including information about students with allergies in the substitute teacher folder

Nut Free Eating Areas

Each grade level eating area has a table marked as a 'Nut Free' Eating Area. Students with food allergies and students who do not pack nuts in their lunch may sit at these tables.

On rainy days, teachers will have an area in the classroom for students with allergies to eat and the desks will be wiped down after eating times. Students will also wash their hands after finishing their lunch to minimize the spread of any allergens. If your child needs to eat in a separate room during rainy day lunch, please contact the nurse to discuss your child’s
needs: nurses@lasdschools.org

Parents of Students with Food Allergies

The LASD staff and teachers are prepared to work with students who have food allergies. Below, please find a short description of how allergy information is communicated in the district. Please also take initiative to speak to your child's teacher directly about their food allergies.

Allergy Information is available to your child's teacher:

  • In our secure student data system where teachers can view the health needs of their class

  • All students with emergency medication for food allergies will have a Food Allergy Action Plan. Food Allergy Action plans and cover letters will be given to the teacher, placed in their substitute teacher folder and also placed in the health office. The cover letter will provide instructions for the teacher on classroom accommodations and how to recognize and respond to an allergic reaction. View an example of a cover letter.

  • Annual Staff Meeting - The District Nurse visits each school with a presentation on health concerns. It includes the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions, overview of the Food Allergy Action Plan and EpiPen administration.
