Los Altos School District

About Us

Our Mission

The Los Altos School District will inspire a passion for learning and prepare all K-8 students to thrive in our rapidly changing global community

LASD is a high achieving TK-8th grade school district in Santa Clara County that serves approximately 3350 students in seven elementary and two junior high schools. All of our schools are California Distinguished Schools.

LASD has a history of academic excellence. Our teachers are extremely dedicated and actively engage in professional learning to ensure that all of our students learn at high levels. Our teachers design culturally relevant, authentic, and engaging learning experiences for students and care deeply that students not meeting or exceeding standards receive the necessary support and attention that they need to be successful. We are especially proud of our computer science program. Last year the district's computer science program was honored with the Santa Clara County School Board Association's Hoffman Award for its innovative practices. We've also hosted visitors from around the world to share the work we are doing around computer science and our junior high electives including a recent delegation of students, teachers and administrators from Taiwan. Beginning in TK, all students have access to an integrated high-quality STEM program, including design and engineering projects and computer science instruction. Our elementary students participate in STEM Expos, where students showcase an individual STEM project within seven different categories. Our junior high schools host a STEM Career Day and STEM Career Night, bringing in parents and community members with STEM backgrounds. STEM is now integrated into our core curriculum for math and science and in electives so that students experience STEM as a mindset and something we do, not a place we go.

Sustainable Learning for Our Future

Mountain SD is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint and fostering a culture of sustainability within its schools and central office.

Sustainability is a core value for our district, and we strive to create a learning environment that promotes environmental responsibility for future generations.

The district has implemented a comprehensive program that includes a variety of initiatives. These include:

  • installing solar panels on school rooftops to generate clean energy
  • implementing a robust recycling and composting program to reduce waste
  • promoting the use of electric school buses for cleaner transportation
  • parterning with local farms to source fresh, locally-grown food for its cafeterias

These efforts are not only benefiting the environment, but also creating a more engaging learning experience for students. Through school gardens and outdoor classrooms, students are actively involved in understanding environmental issues and exploring sustainable solutions.

Mountain SD is committed to continuing its leadership in sustainability and inspiring other school districts to adopt similar practices.
