Special Needs

Inquiries about services for school age children should first be directed to the Principal at the school of attendance. Special Education service inquiries regarding three and four year olds or for students currently attending a private school, should be directed to the Pupil Services
Department at 650-947-1191.

Child Study Team or Student Study Team:

At each school, this team (consisting of the classroom teacher, resource specialist teacher, school psychologist, principal and parent) meets upon request of the teacher to gather information and to brainstorm classroom and homework interventions to address the child’s individual needs and learning pattern. To request that a Child Study Team meeting be considered, contact the child’s teacher or the school principal.

English Learner Program:

[Formerly known as ESL - English as a Second Language.] Each elementary school and Egan Intermediate School provide a sheltered English immersion program. Under this program the student is enrolled in a regular class and receives supplementary instruction in order to learn English. Our district does not offer a bilingual program.

Special Education:

Students with suspected disabilities are offered assessment by district staff at no cost to the parent. If the student meets state eligibility criteria, an IEP [Individual Education Plan] is developed to provide special instruction (and related services if needed.) A resource specialist teacher and a speech therapist are available at each school to provide services on site during the school day. Services are provided in the least restrictive environment, in the regular classroom if possible. Students with more specialized needs may be served at another public school in the area.

504 Plan:

Students with disabilities who do not need special instruction may need modifications in the regular classroom. These modifications are written in a document known as a 504 Plan. [For example, a hearing impaired child may have preferential seating.]

Speech Therapy:

A speech therapist is available at each school to assess students and to provide speech therapy on site if the student meets state eligibility criteria. Parents may contact the speech therapist through the school office.

Preschool Speech Therapy Program:

The Los Altos School District operates a preschool speech assessment and therapy service for three and four year old students from the Los Altos and Mountain View-Whisman School Districts. Students are referred by their parents, usually upon recommendation of the child’s preschool teacher or physician. Students are screened in their home district and must have a delay significant enough to meet state eligibility criteria in order to receive speech therapy. In 2004-05, this program will be located at Los Altos School District located at 201 Covington Road. Inquiries should be directed to the Pupil Services Department at 650-947-1191.

School Psychologist:

A School Psychologist is assigned to each school part-time to provide assessment and consultation services related to learning and behavior in the school setting. For other counseling needs, the School Psychologist may assist parents in finding other resources.

Counseling/CHAC:

A school district guidance counselor / school psychologist is available at Egan and Blach Intermediate Schools. Counseling is also offered at each district school by counselors from a local agency, CHAC (Community Health Awareness Council.) Students may be referred to CHAC by parents, teachers or the student himself through the school office.

Tutoring:

Individual after school tutoring is not provided by the School District. However, parents may call the district receptionist at 650-947-1150 for a list of private tutors in the area.

Home/Hospital Instruction:

When a student is unable to attend school for an extended period due to a medical condition, up to five hours per week of instruction is provided by a teacher in the home. Follow up assignments are provided for the student to work on at home. To arrange for Home Instruction, contact the Pupil Services Department at 650-947-1191.

Medical or Health Care Needs:

The District School Nurse works with the staff at each school to plan for students with special or serious health concerns such as diabetes, serious allergies, and recovery from surgery or illness. Routine health questions and questions regarding dispensing medication at school (which requires a doctor’s signed form) can be addressed to the school secretary. For special situations, contact the District School Nurse, at 650-947-1193.

Vision and Hearing Screening:

State-mandated vision and hearing screening is provided at grades K,2,5 and 7. Working under the supervision of the District Nurse, the Health Assistant notifies parents that follow up is needed if the student does not pass the vision or hearing screening.
